Proofreader at Balthasar Ltd

About Balthasar Ltd
Balthasar, a progressive language business with a small, dedicated staff, has enjoyed continuous growth for many years and now needs to strengthen its team with an additional, professional proofreader. Ideally we would like you to be able to work at our office in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, but would be happy to discuss the option of you working for us remotely.

We work closely with a number of major German manufacturers of heating and air conditioning equipment, for whom we translate and desktop-publish technical and sales literature and various other commercial documents.  Advanced computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, primarily SDL Trados, assist us in making our work consistent and fast, which helps to keep us competitive.

Successful candidates will:

  • have a perfect command and understanding of English and German, particularly written language skills
  • be able to demonstrate exceptional attention to detail in written work, particularly as to whether terminology has been translated consistently throughout a document
  • ideally have an engineering background as this will enable a deeper understanding of the translated texts
  • be highly computer literate and able to quickly get to grips with new software applications
  • be able to work well both independently and within a small team
  • have a positive, enthusiastic attitude to their work

Job description

  • You will be working in a team alongside qualified and experienced translators and proofreaders, and will be responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of German-English translations. This means checking the accuracy and fluency of the translated texts, including spell checking, using quality assurance tools, and performing a visual check of the layout of the documents.
  • All our translations are in electronic form, so you will be working at a computer all day. However, we provide large monitors and ergonomic office equipment, and encourage all staff to take regular breaks to prevent strain or tension.
  • You will be working primarily with SDL Trados and Across translation software, plus Adobe Acrobat for reference and commenting. Training in these applications will be provided.
  • Reference material such as a glossary and style guide will also be provided, and you will need to refer to these while working.
  • You will be responsible for meeting deadlines set by the project managers and will need to communicate with them if any deadlines are not feasible.
